The Service
Don't Leave the Job Half Finished
Tree removal takes care of what's above ground. But the stump left behind is its own problem — and one that most people underestimate until they're dealing with it.
Stumps left in the ground don't just sit there. They become trip hazards for kids and adults alike, obstacles for lawn mowers, and attractive nesting spots for termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects. Many species will also send up new sprouts from the root system — meaning you'll have a persistent regrowth problem until the root structure is dealt with.
Bears Tree Services provides professional stump grinding throughout Santa Cruz, the South Bay, and the Monterey Bay area. Our equipment grinds stumps down below the soil surface, removing the visible obstruction and disrupting the root system enough to prevent regrowth in most cases. The resulting wood chip mulch can be hauled away or left on-site for use in garden beds.
If you've recently had a tree removed — by us or anyone else — we can come out and finish the job.
Know Your Options
Stump Grinding or Full Stump Removal — Which Do You Need?
These are two different services, and the right choice depends on what you're planning to do with the space.
Stump Grinding
The most common option. A stump grinder chews the stump down 6–12 inches below grade, leaving a hole filled with wood chip debris. The main root structure stays in the ground but is severed from the stump and will gradually decay. Best for: most residential situations, lawns, landscaping, anywhere you're not planning major excavation.
Full Stump Removal
The entire stump and root ball are excavated and removed from the ground. This is more invasive, leaves a larger hole, and costs more — but it's the right call when you need the space completely clear for construction, a new planting, or significant landscaping work. Best for: new builds, major hardscaping, replanting in the exact same spot.
Not sure which applies to your situation? We'll walk you through it on-site and recommend the option that makes sense for your property and your plans.
The Hidden Costs of Waiting
Why Homeowners Wish They'd Done This Sooner
Most people put stump removal on the back burner. Here's what tends to change their mind:
Pest Attraction
Decaying wood is prime territory for termites, carpenter ants, beetles, and other wood-boring insects. A stump in your yard is an open invitation — and once they're established, they don't always stay in the stump.
Unwanted Regrowth
Many species, particularly oaks, bay laurel, and fruit trees, will send up vigorous new shoots from the root system after the trunk is removed. If you're not prepared to cut them back repeatedly for years, grinding out the stump is the more permanent solution.
Lawn & Landscaping
Hazards Stumps and surface roots are hard on lawn mower blades and a genuine trip hazard — especially for children and older adults. Partially hidden stumps after grass grows over them are even more dangerous.
Property Aesthetics & Value
An old, rotting stump does no favors for curb appeal or property presentation. Whether you're selling, renting, or simply maintaining a well-kept yard, removing it is a straightforward improvement.
Interference with New Plantings
Trying to plant near or over a stump means competing with a decaying root structure for soil nutrients and space. Removal gives new plantings a clean start.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Stump Removal & Grinding FAQs
Q: How deep does stump grinding go?
A: Typically 6–12 inches below the soil surface, which is enough to remove the visible obstruction and prevent regrowth in most cases. If you need deeper grinding — for new construction or paving over the area — we can accommodate that with advance notice.
Q: Will the stump grow back after grinding?
A: In most cases, no. Grinding severs the stump from the root system and removes the material needed to support new growth. Some species — oaks and certain fruit trees in particular — can send up new shoots from remaining roots, but this is much less common after grinding than after a straight cut. If regrowth is a concern for your specific species, ask us about it on-site.
Q: What do you do with the wood chip debris?
A: Your call. We can haul it away entirely, or leave the chips on-site for use as garden mulch. They break down naturally over time and are great for suppressing weeds around trees and shrubs.
Q: Can you grind a stump close to a fence, wall, or irrigation line?
A: Yes — this is common in residential settings. We work carefully around structures and known utilities. If you have irrigation or electrical lines near the stump, let us know when you book so we can plan accordingly.
Q: How long does stump grinding take?
A: A single residential stump typically takes 30–60 minutes. Multiple stumps or larger root systems take longer. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we quote the job.
Q: Can you remove stumps from a previous tree service — not just trees you removed?
A: Absolutely. We handle stump grinding for stumps left behind by any previous tree work, whether we removed the tree or not. Just send us a photo or give us a call to arrange an on-site assessment.
Q: Is stump grinding safe for nearby trees and plants?
A: Done correctly, yes. Our operators work with precision around surrounding plantings and root systems. We'll flag any concerns before we start if a neighboring tree's roots are close to the work area.
